Authentic or Just Plain Fake?
Many people these days have a hard time differentiating between the fake and authentic/real, especially in luxury goods brands. We are here to help you differentiate and authenticate between the two.
Mulberry
The roots of the Mulberry brand first started in Somerset, England in 1971 by Roger Saul and his mother, Joan. His sister was the designer of one of the first instantly-recognisable tree logo. The name “Mulberry” came from the trees that Roger pass by everyday on his way to school. All of this love of nature and importance of family is shown in the fundamentally British brand. Today, Mulberry is one of the most popular handbag and accessories brands in the UK. Mulberry might not be as well known like its competitors, Chanel and Louis Vuitton in the luxury market, but the brand still stands tall and keeps on growing.As you can see from the picture above, Mulberry can be quite tricky to authenticate but once you know how to do so, it’ll be a breeze. In the picture, the REAL Mulberry is the one on the right hand suede, whereas the fake Baywater Mulberry is on the left. These bags are easy to authenticate through their attributes such as leather weight, texture, and even scents could indicate the quality and cannot be replicated perfectly by a non-luxury brand distributor.
Leather and Lining
There are a wide range of bags from Mulberry, but most of them are made from grained, thick calf leather that makes them sturdy, durable, and well structured. Not all Mulberry bags are lined, and the lining can vary between one of the other. For example, the classic Bayswater bag regularly doesn’t feature a lining, simply shows the raw suede inside the bag itself. Some other bags, such as the Alexa, have a plain canvas lining, while others may have a fabric lining which is printed with the mulberry tree logo. Stitching and Edging
Stitching can also be an indicator for authenticity. Counterfeit handbags will often have thick, uneven and messy stitching, whereas an authentic Mulberry would have straight, clean, same sized stitching throughout. The edging around the handles and edges of the leather should be neat and consistent, as many counterfeit bags have messier edging which varies in width throughout the bag.Hardware
Buckles are a great start to look out for in authenticating a Mulberry too! A real Mulberry would have buckles stamped with consistent, thick, straight, and even font, whereas the poser/counterfeit bags would usually feature a font that is thinner and slightly askew.Mulberry also stamps rivets and other round small hardware with the Mulberry tree logo. The stamp should be consistent with a Mulberry tree on the inner metal disc.
There are two mainly used brands of zip’s that are constantly used by Mulberry, which are RiRi and their own branded zips. If you look carefully underneath a Mulberry bag’s zip, it should either have “RiRi” or the Mulberry tree logo on it. As with the rest of the metal work on the stamped tree should be consistent and neat too.
The back of the front plate of a Mulberry Bayswater will also be secured with flat head screws. Many counterfeits use a completely different screw to secure the plate.
Made In
Mulberry is a UK based brand that produce all of their leather goods in England, but that is no longer the case as the factory in England is running at full capacity recently, the brand has started outsourcing some of its production to other countries such as China and Turkey. As of today, only about 30% of Mulberry bags are actually produced in England, therefore, it’s common to see a “made in China” or “made in Turkey” tag inside a newer Mulberry bag.Heat Stamping and Brass Disc
Every Mulberry bags comes with a leather tab which is heat-stamped with its logo, as well as an attached metal disc engraved with the iconic Mulberry tree. Very few counterfeit manufacturers get the font right for the serial numbers as well as the heat stamping on each bag. You should pay attention to a counterfeit’s disc which is usually deeply engraved rather than lightly laser etched.
